Volunteer for a study
Help test the next medicine or health product
New medicines and health products must be tested in people before anyone can use them. Volunteers make that possible. Register your interest, and we will tell you when a study may suit you.
What taking part means
What is a clinical study?
A clinical study tests a medicine, device or health product in people. It checks that the product is safe and that it works.
Each study has a plan. The plan says what will happen, how often you visit, and what tests you have.
You decide, with all the facts
Before you join, the study team explains everything to you. They tell you what will happen, the possible risks and the possible benefits. You can ask as many questions as you like.
You join only if you agree in writing. This is called informed consent: saying yes after you understand what the study involves.
An ethics committee checks every study
An ethics committee is a group of doctors, scientists and members of the public. They check that a study is safe and fair for the people in it. No study starts without their approval.
You can stop at any time
Taking part is your choice. You can leave a study at any time. You do not have to give a reason. Leaving will not affect the medical care you get.
Costs and payment
You may be paid for your time, and we may cover your travel costs. The details depend on the study, and we tell you before you agree.
Who can join
Who can take part
Each study has its own rules about who can join. Some need healthy people. Others need people with a certain health condition.
Age limits depend on the study. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must register for you.
Registering does not sign you up for a study. It only tells us you are interested. When a study may suit you, we contact you and explain it.
What we ask for, and why
We ask for very little to start
We only ask for what we need to contact you.
- Your name, so we know who we are talking to.
- Your age range, so we only contact you about studies you could join.
- Your contact details, so we can reach you.
- How you prefer to be contacted: email, phone or WhatsApp.
- Your consent, so we have your permission to keep your details and contact you.
We do not ask about your health when you register. We ask for health details only when a specific study needs them. We will explain why we need them first.

We add you to our list of people interested in studies.
We contact you when a study may suit you
We get in touch the way you asked us to. This may not happen straight away.
We explain the study
The study team tells you what it involves. If a study needs health details, we ask for them now, and say why.
